With the way this year is flying by, it will be derby day before you know it. And from those first Juleps on, summer cocktail season will be in full swing. So, for a change of pace, Saturday we are bringing in some amazing spirits to sample, including two of the Michter’s whiskeys and two organic, great-tasting flavored vodkas from Crop. Neither spirit is mass produced, so what you find in the glass is authentic, craft-distilled spirits that are as friendly to the lips and palate as they are to the budget.

Michter’s Small Batch Bourbon ($44.99): A bold and assertive dram. Intensity is present from the get-go; on the nose: Butterscotch, over-ripe banana, creme brulee, and cinnamon. The body takes all that and runs with it, adding brisk oak elements, apple pie notes, dried figs, and a soupçon of cinnamon. The finish is seductive and supple, offering a wonderful balance between dusty wood and brown sugar sweetness. An excellent buy.

Michter’s Single Barrel Rye ($44.99): This Rye has a nice, color, a bright copper-orange, very much what one might expect to encounter here. The nose is packed with fruity, spicy rye notes, but strongly belted with something of the earthy caramel candy, like a proper craft caramel candy. A creamy texture on the palate, but in contrast to the nose it delivers a more standard current of rye flavors, with a woodsy twist.

Crop Organic Cucumber Vodka ($26.99): Crop is a line of organic, artisanal vodkas made from grain grown on the great plains of the United States and flavored only with all natural ingredients for a quality tha tis evident from the first, smooth sip. Clean and pure, with tru flavor, this cucumber vodka is a favorite among professional bartenders and home enthusiasts alike.

Crop Organic Meyer Lemon Vodka ($26.99): As with the cucuber vodka, Crop cuts no corners in their production process, only delicious Meyer lemons, which are then macerated in the base vodka until the resulting product is as bright, zesty and fresh tastign as the fruti would be hanging on the tree. Fantastic for cocktails, sipping or using to make your own infusions.
