CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO!

Cinco de Mayo has become one of the most beloved and widely celebrated observations of Mexican-American culture in the US. Commemorating the 1862 Battle of Puebla, an unlikely victory over the French, Cinco de Mayo is a lively celebration of Mexican food, culture and drink.

Arguably the most popular and ubiquitous of Mexican libations is the inimitable Tequila. Made from 100% Blue Agave, the category of spirits was long stigmatized as the drink of spring break and bad decision making.

That is no longer the case, with the market full of high end, ultra-premium tequilas that cost an arm and a leg. Fortunately for us, Casamigos- George Clooney’s tequila-  isn’t one of those. Ultra-premium quality at a more budget-friendly price is the watchword at “House of Friends” (or Casamigos), the south-of-the-border retreat Clooney shares with pal and partner, spirits wiz Rande Gerber.

Casamigos started as a bottling that the two friends commissioned from a local distillery. When the distillery claimed that they were ordering too much tequila solely for personal consumption, they were forced to go legit, and developed the brand accordingly. As a result, we now all have access to these tequilas that respect tradition and celebrate old friendships, while consistently looking forward.

Casamigos Tequila Blanco ($46.99): Gorgeous, creamy and silky with a vibrant palate of vanilla, citrus and a pleasant bright herbaceous quality. No lime or salt required here, thank you very much. Great for mixing, sipping over ice or shooting back with friends.

Casamigos Tequila Reposado ($52.99): In the Reposado, we begin to see the influence of the wood assert itself. While vanilla remains pronounced on the palate, the nose is more complex and inviting than the blanco and the texture and smoothness are considerably enhanced.

Casamigos Tequila Anejo ($59.99): After nearly a year and a half in oak, the tequila takes on an almost whiskey-like structure, with the aromas developing into mocha and toffee, enhancing all the tequila goodness that was already there. Recommended for sipping neat.
