Friday brings an opportunity to taste some fantastic wines from ‘the South’. Two wines direct from Down Under, and a further pair of wines from Sicily, the southern-most wine-making region in Italy. All four feature the ripeness and richness so often associated with the sun-drenched southern climes. Who knows what the weather will hold this weekend, but whatever the case may be, we will have bottled liquid sunshine for your tasting enjoyment.

Misfit Wine Co. ‘Cycle Buff Beauty’ Shiraz/Malbec ($17.99): This wine is, as the name suggests, a beauty. Aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and wood smoke, with a subtle floral note beneath. Offers intense cherry, blue fruit liqueur and spice-cake flavors that become more pronounced as the wine opens in the glass, picking up a peppery nuance along the way. Shows very good depth and a hint of jamminess on the long, supple finish.

Red Head Studios Yard Dog White ($12.99): Very pale gold, with underlying aromas of stone fruit and top notes of blossom. It’s a full mouthful of white peach, apricot, slightly more tropical fruits with piercing mineral and lemon acidity providing a taut backbone and keeping all that golden sunshine ripeness in place. Verdelho, Chardonnay and Riesling blended to perfection.

our next two entries come from Poggio Anima, in sunny Sicily, which translates to ‘Hill of Soul’, paying homage to the wine-makers’ attempt to capture the ‘soul’ of each vineyard and grape. No manipulation, no makeup. Just the pure expression of the fruit and site.

Poggio Anima Nero d’Avola Asmodeus ($14.99) Dark ruby-red. Blackberry and dark plum on the fresh nose, with complicating notes of anise, shoe polish and fresh herbs. Bright and juicy on entry, then firmer in the middle, offering dark cherry and plum with a hint of cola. A musky herbal note comes up with air on the moderately long finish.

Poggio Anima Grillo Uriel ($17.99) Light straw color with green hints. Rich bouquet of tropical fruits with notes of apricots, peaches and hints of cinnamon. Well-balanced medium- bodied wine with fresh mineral notes and tropical fruit characters and a very pleasant citrusy finish.
