A TOUR OF BILLECART SALMON

December 28, 2017
Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve NV ($49.99): James Suckling 92 pts
Fine bubbles which rise slowly, persistent mousse. Straw-colored. A nose of ripe pear with some touches of cut hay. Full fruit, but clean in the mouth. This cuvée contains 40% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay. All wines from the best sites in the department of the Marne, from more than twenty top vineyards in Champagne. The overall composition of this cuvée has not changed much for almost fifty years. Fresh and long tasting, the Brut Réserve may be drunk on all occasions.
Billecart Salmon Brut Rose NV ($74.99):  – Wine Spectator 93 pts
A lovely rosé in an almost vinous style, with mouthwatering acidity and a fine, lacy mousse carrying appealing flavors of ripe raspberry, white cherry fruit, star anise, mandarin orange peel and honeysuckle. Lightly chalky on the lasting finish.

Billecart Salmon Demi Sec NV ($49.99):  It’s pale gold color is beautiful, emitting a constant ballet of fine, regular and persistent bubbles in the flute. Its nose is lively with a hint of delicate white flowers and envolves towards aromas of buttered brioche. On the palate the Demi-Sec champagne is full-flavored and is a reference for its perfect balance between sugar, alcohol and acidity.

Billecart Salmon Cuvee Nicolas Francois Brut 2002 ($184.99): James Suckling 98 pts
his has a super-composed nose with gently spiced pastry and bright strawberry and cherry fruits, as well as some spiced brulée custard and praline. There’s a lot of deep-set complexity here. The palate has a bright, crunchy, and assertive burst of peach and lemon flavor on entry, while the pinot takes the mid-palate with fleshy white cherries and smooth phenolics that hold through to the finish with gently nutty mushroom and cherry-pip flavors to close. Great balance and power. Drink now through to 2025+. This vintage is a 60/40 split between pinot noir and chardonnay.
